The Carrus 204 L or City L was one of the first low floored buses to enter operation in Finland (with the Lahti 402). The first City L appeared on the streets of Helsinki in 1993, with larger amounts entering service in 1994. Like all other Carrus-buses the City L has a stanless steel chassis. It also has plastic front and rear masks in stead of fiberglass ones. Along with its longer bogie-version this is one of the most popular models in the Helsinki City Region and it is used by all four major operators.
This bus is a low entry version, in other words the front part of the bus is at near curb height (32cm) with a step behind the middle doors and a slope to the rear. The rear end of the bus is at normal height, so there are two steps at the bakc door. The very first of these buses had automatic ramps for wheelchairs at the middle doors, but they soon proved too weak for the Finnish climate (snow, ice and sleet galore) and were later replaced with manually operated ramps, which are also used in all subsequent bus models. Another feature that appears in all low floored buses is the kneeling system built into the suspension, which can be used to lower the buses floor level to curb height.
